Indirect lighting

I went to the spa one evening after work for a massage, and while I was sitting in the waiting room, I noticed how calm I felt almost instantly. At first, I wondered if it was the eucalyptus smell… or maybe just the fact that I was finally sitting down. But then it clicked: it was the lighting.

Nothing harsh. No ceiling lights blasting down. Every light was directed upward, toward the ceiling and walls, creating this soft, warm glow. The whole space felt quiet, grounded, and comforting without trying too hard.

And honestly, once you start paying attention, you can’t unsee it. Take a walk in your neighbourhood at night, not that I snoop or anything (okay, maybe just a little). So many homes are lit with stark white lighting. Not warm white. Not soft. Just white. The kind of lighting that feels more like the middle of a Walmart aisle than a place to unwind after a long day.

Ambiance lighting really is the key to making a home feel warm and cozy, especially after an intense day at work or with the kids. The best part? It doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive.

I ordered three simple standing light bars on Amazon and placed them facing the wall instead of the room. That’s it. Instant indirect lighting. I also added LED strips behind the TV to softly light up our brick wall, and it completely changed the vibe of the space.

These are small, simple tricks, no full renovation, no big makeover, but they make a home feel calmer, warmer, and more lived in. I’ll leave some pictures so you can see the difference for yourself.
